Our facts for you about baby sleep
A baby sleeps at a completely different rhythm to adults. The first few months in particular can therefore be a real challenge for parents. How much and how long a baby sleeps is different for every baby. But they all have one thing in common: they sleep a lot and are not yet familiar with our sleep-wake rhythm. They first have to learn it.
There are countless tips and guides on the subject of a baby's sleep. Every newborn has its own sleeping patterns. This is completely normal, because everyone is different. Some children simply fall asleep. Others need their time or don't want to go to bed at all. Of course, it is important that babies get enough sleep. This allows them to develop healthily and discover the world full of energy.
The sleep rhythm of a baby
In the first few days and weeks, a baby seems to sleep almost all day. A newborn actually sleeps up to 18 hours on average in the first two months. During the day, however, small babies sleep no more than 2-4 hours at a time. At night, your baby sleeps up to 6 hours at a time, but of course this also varies greatly. Unlike us adults, your baby does not yet have any deep sleep phases. It sleeps a light sleep, known as REM sleep. This means it wakes easily when its basic needs come up. This light sleep is completely normal and ensures the survival of newborn babies. When it wakes up at night, it wants to be nursed, changed or held in its arms.
In addition, your child does not yet know the difference between day and night. Even in the first few months, it learns and develops. Little by little, your child will learn to distinguish between day and night. In the first 4 to 6 months, the sleep phases become longer. By the sixth month, most babies wake up once during the night because they are hungry. However, the baby's internal clock slowly adapts to that of its parents. Your baby may sleep up to 11 hours at night by the age of six months.
In the second year of life, a child needs about 13 hours of sleep. Many use part of this time for a nap, but here too, the behavior of each child is different. The older children get, the less sleep they need.
You can help your baby to learn to fall asleep. With routines, you get your baby used to a recurring rhythm.
Rituals and habits
Babies don't automatically get tired when it gets dark. They need fixed routines to get used to bedtime. You will find out which ritual works best for you. In the first few months of life, feeding or bathing in the evening often helps. Brushing teeth and putting on pyjamas can also be fixed routines. If possible, put your child to bed awake and always at the same time. Bedtime songs and bedtime stories are also a popular evening ritual. Spending time together at bedtime creates memories for life and gives your child a feeling of closeness and security.
We all sleep best when we feel safe and secure.
Co-sleeping
Co-sleeping is common in many cultures. In the first year, the baby sleeps in the parents' bedroom, but ideally in its own bed. Especially when a child gets tired, it seeks closeness to its caregivers. Babies sleep more peacefully due to the sound of their parents' breathing. The physical closeness to mom and dad provides a sense of security and strengthens the child's basic trust.
The right sleeping environment
A comfortable and safe sleeping environment is important for restful sleep. The bedroom should always be well ventilated and somewhat darkened. A diaper, underwear and suitable pyjamas are sufficient clothing for the night. Plus a suitable sleeping bag, depending on the season. Just like the right clothes, a sleeping bag should fit well for a safe night's sleep. It is best to lay your baby on their back to fall asleep so that they can breathe easily. There should be as little as possible in the crib itself besides the baby. Pillows, blankets or cuddly toys can restrict space and breathing.
